John Dumelo wins Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat, marking NDC’s first victory in 24 years at the Ayawaso constituency. This achievement represents the first time in 24 years that the NDC has secured the seat.
Dumelo’s campaign was centered on change and steering Ghana towards a better path. He encouraged voters to accept items from the opposition party but to cast their votes for the NDC.
The election was rife with controversy after Dumelo filed a petition with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate the alleged electoral misconduct of the incumbent MP, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, who is accused of distributing food to security personnel during the special voting period.
Dumelo’s endorsement as the NDC parliamentary candidate was announced in August 2023, after the other two aspirants stepped down to support him.
Election Results: The provisional election results released indicates that John Dumelo garnered 38,471 votes, whereas Ma Lydia Alhassan obtained 25,775 votes. Dumelo achieved victories in 9 out of the 10 polling stations.
Ma Lydia’s Tenure: Ma Lydia Alhassan has served seven terms in Parliament under the National Patriotic Party (NPP) before being unseated.
